Please subscribe to our newsletter.Good Lord, how I wanted one. That article was my introduction to the world of velomobiles, which can pretty much be defined as aerodynamically-shelled recumbent tricycles. The Cyclodyne is now long gone, and has been replaced in my yearnings by what is probably the sexiest velomobile currently available for purchase, the Beyss Go-One. This August, I had my first-ever chance to see a Go-One up close and personal, and talked to its owner about the fantasy versus reality of owning and using such a vehicle.
What he had to say was definitely eye-opening.
Hugo Ciro lives in Victoria, British Columbia, where he runs a fair trade coffee importing business. His Go-One is one of about 13 in North America. He visited the Beyss plant in Germany two years ago, where he tried out a Go-One and met Michael Beyss, the company president and vehicle designer. Beyss also designed a little car you may have heard of, called the Smart ForTwo. Ciro decided he quite liked the Go-One, and arranged to purchase one.
He also agreed to become an agent for the company, meaning that people in his region who want to try out a Go-One can contact him for a test drive. To remedy this problem, Ciro bought and installed a BionX electric assist motor.
Ciro has a place to park his vehicle at work, although he says he has left it unattended in the grocery store parking lot.
Another Go-One owner I spoke to in Seattle said he has left his in the long-term parking at the airport. It would be somewhat like stealing the Mona Lisa, in that the thief would risk discovery if they displayed or tried to sell it. Unfortunately for my fast-as-a-car velomobile fantasies, Ciro informed me that he travels at the side of the road, like a bicycle.
Even though some velomobile-makers have waiting lists of over three years, the vehicles will probably never reach a decent economy of scale unless they somehow become better able to function within urban traffic. To that end, he is currently designing his own velomobile, better suited to practical use.Velomobiles 101 with Mr. Wizard-Doug Davis

With a light system, hatch, mirror and built-in luggage space, Rotovelo is ready to ride! Leave it on the street, park it outside and take it anywhere you want, without having to worry about scratching the paint.
Rotovelo features an Australian-made roto-molded fairing in eight eye-catching colours. Weighing approximately 33 kilograms, Rotovelo offers durability and performance. Motivated by a desire to build affordable and practical velomobiles, Tri-Sled designed Rotovelo to provide a broader range of users with the opportunity to experience the benefits of velomobiling.
Our aim was to attract new velomobile riders as well as inspire existing ones! Rotovelo achieves this aim by taking the velomobile concept down to its foundations: a weather protected, comfortable, safe and aerodynamic vehicle that anyone can jump in and ride.
Roto-molding is an efficient and more affordable manufacturing process that significantly reduces wait times for fairing production. Roto-molded plastic is also a highly durable material which improves the practical possibilities for velomobile riders. Having a tough and sturdy fairing means that Rotovelo is a vehicle you can take and park anywhere.
Rotovelo was designed by Trisled's Director, Ben Goodall. Ben has been working in the HPV field for over fifteen years, designing and prototyping all of Trisled's past and present models. Ben is passionate about building human powered vehicles that deliver practical real-world outcomes. Trisled has engaged an Australian quality endorsed roto-molding company to manufacture the Rotovelo mold and farings.
Our frames are built in-house at the Trisled factory and the machines are assembled by our bicycle mechanics. Components are sourced from our local and international suppliers. Where possible we try to use standard, easily replaceable bicycle components. Nothing can describe the thrill of going fast using the power of your own two legs with a little aerodynamic assistance of course! We recommend a test ride at our factory on the Mornington Peninsula to experience the benefits.
With a massive 80 litres of luggage space, Rotovelo ticks all the boxes for touring! It has weather protection, accessible spare parts, comfort, visibility, and it improves your performance and speed. The results from our forward-order customers and prototype testers indicate that Rotovelo adds about per cent to a rider's performance compared to a standard upright bicycle. Rotovelo builds on 15 years of racing, real-world, and record-breaking experience.
Trisled began developing Rotovelo about five years ago, but our first in-house 'proof of concept' prototype wasn't built until The first roto-molded shells were built in March and since then we've been refining the roto-molding process and getting our racing team to 'test' aka 'thrash' prototypes. In September we sent out 8 Rotovelos to forward-order customers who have been providing us with extensive real-world feedback. The results have been exciting!
Rotovelo comes standard with LED front and rear lights. A battery and switch box is mounted inside the vehicle for easy access. Like a bicycle, Rotovelo riders can use their arms to indicate their turning intentions on the road.
Rotovelo has a completely contained roto-molded luggage compartment either side and overtop of the rear wheel. Rotovelo's front wheels are removable using an 8mm hex key.
The back wheel fits through a space in the rear of the fairing and uses a quick-release system. Rotovelo has one of the largest weight and height ranges of any velomobile on the market.LOG IN.
