Certainly, the best practice rule of thumb is less configuration is better - that is only configure what is wrong. This is the original way of configuring multiple monitors with X, and it has been around for decades.
Each physical monitor is assigned as an X screen, and while you can move the mouse between them, they are more or less independent. The first screen is With this configuration, it is not possible to move windows between screens, apart from a few special programs like GIMP and Emacs which have multi-screen support.
Alternatively, if you have a terminal on each screen launching programs will inherit the DISPLAY value and appear on the same screen they were launched on.
But moving an application between screens involves closing it and reopening it again on the other screen. Working this way does have certain advantages, such as windows popping up on one screen won't steal the focus away from you if you are working on another screen - each screen is quite independent.

Input thread The input thread would directly process input from libinput, and under normal circumstances have the ability to request hardware cursor updates directly to the KMS thread.
It should also be able to forward input events directly to Wayland clients by directly talking to the Wayland thread. Wayland thread When possible, for example when no update that happens on the primary plane is scheduled and a clients buffer should be directly scan-out-able onto a CRTC, the Wayland thread should be able to directly request the KMS thread to update the new content.
Main compositing thread A main thread would handle compositing of the primary plane, as well as handle window management and everything related to that. It is assumed that the compositing thread may occasionally stall due to various reasons, such as GPU synchronization. A major reason for splitting up various things into different threads is to simply be able bypass the compositing thread to avoid these stalls.
Extensions All extensions would have to be rewritten, probably from scratch, as the architecture would change dramatically.
This, however, means we'd have the ability limit what extensions can do in the compositor process for stability reasonsand reconsider whether monkey patching or well defined extension points is the way forward. It would probably be a good idea to be wary about introducing extensions in a garbage collected language in the compositor process however, but only allowing compiled compositor side extensions might be very problematic. Implementation Some things such as the introduction multiple compositor side threads can be done early without much external impact.
On the other hand, the parts specific to the shell UI and UX is hard to implement without breaking extensions. Either one move piece by piece of the UI out of the compositor process into a new UI process, but each piece moved would break extensions interacting with that particular piece. Thus, there are three options: Work completely on a separate branch until ready, "Move" piece by piece while keeping the existing piece intact and the new piece turned off by default Enter a period of constant breakage and move piece by piece while breaking more and more extensions every release All three has both pros and cons.
Option B Another option, while potentially being less drastic, but one that would only solve out of 5 of the listed problem areas, is to introduce a proxy display server. A proxy display server would be somewhat similar to an X server, as in, it would be the Wayland server clients talk to, and it would be the process interacting with KMS and libinput, but GNOME Shell would instead be compositing frames handing it over to the proxy display server instead of directly to KMS.

I notice my system is snappy without problem drivers are up to date for my amd gpu and my other system is a lot better too as well. This is great to see. It was great to see the work put into Gnome 3. And, if what kind of time frame would that entail?
However, at the moment there are no newer performance fixes that have landed in 3. I do expect and hope that 3. Same here, great work made on 3. Performance still tanks though on multimonitor setups, janky animations and whatnot. I know work is ongoing on alleviating these issues, but how close to completion is it I wonder?

The more tricky case is when the GPUs are not the same and may even differ by chipset or brand.
Though this is not as commonly found, any Linux desktop user with such a setup will tell you the struggles of utilizing all of their hardware, and how the desktop experience is less than ideal. Large data centres, supercomputers, workstations etc. Whether display devices monitors are connected to separate graphics cards, or a rendering task is being offloaded to a separate chip, situations where they effectively have to interact to render output to a user becomes a challenge.
The core for the difficulty on Linux comes down to a single issue: old standards. This protocol was officially released in yes, over 30 years before writing this articleand has for the most part remained the same. The core principals of this standard are to provide a solid foundation for what would be needed to generate graphical interfaces for users, while allowing developers the ability to add extra functionality where needed.
Although this concept is one of the strengths of the protocol, it has with time become one of its biggest weaknesses. As X11 is only a protocol, there have been dozens of implementations of this since its release. Of these, the most popular used today is X. The reason advancements were even needed is due to the aging of the standard.
Some key functionality defined by X11, such as fonts, are no longer required of a windowing system these days this is left to a separate window manager. This is the main challenge when working with powerful and widespread standards: they become hard to replace.

Instead, the focus was to improve and reduce the overall power consumption of the device, seeing as it is intended to be portable. Since many modern CPUs have built-in integrated graphics chips, which perform admirably and with much reduced power usage, the goal was to utilize both types within the same device, and dynamically select the appropriate GPU for any given task. Word processing? The hybrid approach allows the device to conserve power for general use-cases, while allowing good performance in beefier applications, such as 3D games.
These dynamic capabilities, while convenient, hit the Linux community hard. The original methods allowing users to run displays across separate GPUs was simple: separate X. Org sessions.
