Wired doorbells are typically slimmer and more stylish than their battery-powered counterparts, and the Eufy Security Video Doorbell is no exception. The glossy, piano-black front face of the device adds a touch of class, but we were disappointed to see scuffs and scratches appear quickly, despite careful handling.
Local storage option complements its no subscription required service. Installation of a wired doorbell is more complicated than wireless devices.
Anyone with basic home improvement experience should find the job straightforward, thanks to the clear instructions and in-app guidance.
Unlike Nest Hello, which connects to and uses your existing mechanical doorbell chime, Anker supplies a stand-alone electronic chime that sounds a little too quietly when the doorbell button is pressed. Clearly labeled packs of jumper cables and screws ease the complexity of installation, but you may prefer to hire a qualified electrician for the job, particularly if your home is equipped with multiple chimes. A flat metal rear bracket and degree angled wedge mount are included to allow you to find an optimal position for the doorbell.
We were also pleased to see the inclusion of cable extensions and wire nuts in the box to simplify connecting the doorbell to our existing wiring. Once the bell is connected and powered on, the accompanying electronic chime conveniently plugs into a power outlet and communicates wirelessly with the doorbell.
Our installation took around 15 minutes and was issue-free. In use, we found the Eufy Security Video Doorbell to work reasonably well, although we did encounter some connectivity issues during our tests. When the doorbell button was pressed, or the camera detected motion, we received a notification on our phone almost immediately.
When tapped, a live video stream opens, supporting two-way audio or a small selection of canned messages, which can be triggered to respond to callers. The rear-mounted bracket is equipped with thermal pads to dissipate heat.
So much so that the rear mounted bracket is equipped with thermal pads to dissipate the heat, which gives a slight cause for concern. During tests, we did encounter some reliability issues with the Eufy Security app when viewing live video from the doorbell. On some occasions, audio was available, but live video refused to stream.
Other times, the app simply crashed when the livestream was triggered. The Eufy Security app itself is mostly well designed and simple to use, although we did notice a number of poorly translated sentences in the user interface that should have been cleaned up during testing. You can adjust motion sensitivity, configure activity zones to reduce false notifications, tweak video quality and bandwidth requirements, adjust notification content to reduce delays, and much more.To me, storing my data locally is the only way to ensure no one else sees it.

A plug-in transformer delivering more than 1 amp would be a whole different animal - something like a laptop transformer. Is there any official word on power requirements for the Eufy living in isolation, without a pre-existing doorbell - specifically, these plug-in transformers?
It seems unlikely that the Eufy itself needs amps, if people are using mA plug-ins. Good day ndalby to clarify why it needs the V 30VA power source is because the doorbell and camera use different power draws! Doorbell and audio use 16V most of the time and the video uses 16VV depending on the activity and quality of video set.
It originally did not make sense to me neither but I spook to an electrician that installs video doorbells and this was his explanation. Also if for any reason you want more than one doorbell you will need a different transformer that will use a straight 24V so they will not be under powered.
There appear to be many people using a plug-in style AC adapter with the Eufy doorbell.
Note that 30VA seems like a lot of power for a camera. Consider: a Wyze wifi camera uses about 4W. AnkerSupport March 10,am 6.A video doorbell is a useful little smart-home device. Put together a doorbell and a security camera, and you have a simple device that can bring convenience and security to your house.
When someone presses the doorbell, it notifies you on your phone and allows you to view who is outside the door before you open it. Can it perform as well as Ring or Nest Hello? The Eufy video doorbell works almost the same as Ring except for a few differences. The main difference is that it requires a wired connection instead of being battery operated.
This means that its installation is not as straightforward and easy as Ring. It will always be on. Unlike Ring and Nest Hello that upload and store your videos on their server for a monthly fee, the Eufy video doorbell comes with 4GB local storage that can store up to 30 days of video footage.
For those who are concerned about privacy issues, you can be sure that your video footage stays with you and not stored on foreign servers. The camera on the video doorbell can take images at 2K quality x resolution. It also comes with HDR and distortion correction so you can be sure the video quality is good. In fact, you will have to disable your existing door chime so as to redirect the power to the video doorbell.
As a replacement, there is an external door chime in the box that can connect with the video doorbell. It will require you to plug it into a power socket, though.
Inside the box you will find the video doorbell, a base plate to mount the doorbell, an indoor chime and some wires and cables. Before you install, do note that the Eufy video doorbell is designed for North American houses and requires that your existing door chime is powered by a transformer. For it to work, you will need to short the door chime connection so the power is redirected to the video doorbell. This also means that your existing door chime will cease working. For my house, the doorbell wiring is totally different and is not connected to a transformer.
I had to buy an additional power adapter to connect the video doorbell to an external power source. To install the video doorbell, you have to drill two holes in the wall, screw the baseplate onto the wall, connect the doorbell wires to the video doorbell and attach the video doorbell to the baseplate. For me, it only took around 30 minutes of work to get it done.Replacing a Transformer
If you are not sure of the wiring details, it is best to get a technician to help you. Once the video doorbell is installed and powered up, you have to install the eufy Security app on your phone.
Follow the instructions in the app to connect the doorbell. It is very straightforward and will take around five minutes to get everything running. The Eufy video doorbell comes with motion detection, and its button will light up whenever it detects motion. When someone presses the doorbell, it will trigger the live video, allowing you to see who is outside the door.
When looking at the live-streaming video, you can choose to talk in realtime with the person, even if you are not at home. You can also record multiple custom responses and play it back to the visitor. I receive a lot of parcels and am often not at home, so I find this feature to be quite useful, as I am able to tell the delivery person where to store my parcels. The quality of the image and video is good.

No subscriptions required Good video quality 30 days of local recording. When it comes to video doorbells, Ring and Nest are the two most popular.
They offer a variety of features, like the ability to respond to a doorbell ring from your smartphone, people detection, cloud storage, and automatic recording triggered by movement or when someone approaches.
But many of these features require cloud subscriptions, and you do give up some privacy in the process. When you run out of space, the doorbell deletes the oldest video to make room for the new.
When it comes to security, just knowing a system is watching is a powerful deterrent. But what it lacks in beauty, it makes up for in power and capability, at a low price. And for that price, you also get enough local storage for 30 days of event-triggered video, motion and human detection, and the ability to respond in real-time without a cloud subscription.
Despite the lack of a cloud connection, Eufy does an admirable job of locally processing video to detect human presence. When a human approaches your door, it takes her picture and notifies you with a thumbnail of it. And it works surprisingly well—almost as good as the Nest Hello, despite its lack of cloud power.
To power the doorbell, you wire it into your existing doorbell system.
You also need to plug in the wireless chime that comes with the doorbell, which saves you even more money. With the Ring 2, another wired doorbell, you have to pay extra for the chime. Most video doorbells, including Ring, record at p resolution. You can also toggle HDR on or off; when I turned it on, it prevented blow out from the sun. One thing I appreciate about 2K resolution is its ability to correct for fisheye distortion, without losing a lot of the image.
Because of the nature of wide-angle lenses, without correction, the edges of the screen are rounded instead of straight. But correcting fisheye distortion cuts out some of the image. A larger resolution prevents that from being a total loss, and the final image looks good. Eufy has another trick, as well: you can record custom responses.
This is a lot like a quick response to text messages. When someone rings the doorbell, you can reply with one of your recorded responses, rather than load up the video and talk to the person in real-time. The Eufy app available for iOS and Android has a good layout, and everything is easy to find. You can turn off the chime, disable watermarks and time stamps, and record custom greetings.
The Eufy Doorbell nearly reaches perfection, but it just misses on a few points. The company tries to make up for this by including a wireless chime, but being able to use your own would be better.
You either have to fix the wiring or run a plug-in transformer. The lack of cloud intelligence sometimes shows, as well. Most of the time, when I get a doorbell notification on my phone, I open it and see a face.
But sometimes, the notification alerts me about a person at my door and shows my car. Or a plant.
